I Am An International Student Attending University Of Texas

I am an international student attending University of Texas at Arlington. It is my second semester here. I am getting used to with the American educational system and culture. So far, I feel positive about it and I think I am excelling. My first semester was however a total cultural shock. Being a business major wanting to pursue career in accounting, I wanted to take Accounting, Business, Economics and Finances classes but I was forced into taking Astronomy, History, Communication and English classes due to the general education requirement. Considering the resources and time I spent attending UTA, I could not see the point of taking those classes that were totally different from my major. It kept me wondering about the value of those†¦show more content†¦Holding an undergraduate degree signifies that the person is a well-educated and qualified member of the society. At such, it is critical for them to have a wide knowledge of topics such as society, culture, art, history, politics, science, and mathematics. General education in college introduces students with such wide variety of subject which makes them well rounded and able to tackle various problem of the world. Dr. Bruce Jackson, director of Columbia College, has written short, but strong points addressing the importance of general education in his report. Dr. Jackson believes in developing a solid foundation in various general education disciplines, which he sees as the first skill sets necessary to contribute to communities, the country, and the world. He also compares the importance of interdisciplinary skill sets students learn by taking history, government, humanities, social science, mathematics, and science and their implication in one s life. His example ‘I am a musician, but I use the lesson learned in my algebra class about certain variables to find uncertain variables to write music’ speaks volumes about the importance of interdisciplinary skillsets.
